Minimum Wage in Luxembourg in 2026: Amounts and Calculations
The social minimum wage (SSM) in Luxembourg is the highest in the European Union. In 2026, it stands at about 2,570 euros gross per month for an unskilled full-time employee (40 hours per week) and 3,085 euros gross per month for a skilled employee (+20%). These amounts are automatically indexed to the cost of living.
Skilled vs. unskilled distinction
The skilled SSM (+20%) applies to employees holding an official professional qualification diploma (DAP, DT, BTS, or recognised equivalent) in the field of activity performed. The qualification must match the position held: a qualified chef working as a chef earns the skilled SSM, but if they work in another sector, the unskilled SSM applies. Minors (17-18) receive 80% of the SSM and adolescents (15-17) 75%.
Indexation mechanism
Luxembourg has a unique automatic wage indexation system. When the consumer price index (IPCN) rises by 2.5% from the last tranche, all wages (including the SSM) are automatically increased by 2.5%. This mechanism protects employees' purchasing power but represents a significant charge for employers, who must anticipate these increases in their salary budget. The government can modulate the timing of application to smooth the economic impact.
From gross to net: simulation
For a single person with no children earning the unskilled SSM of around 2,570 euros gross, employee contributions (health 3.05%, pension 8%, long-term care 1.40%) represent about 320 euros. Income tax withheld at source (class 1) is about 120 euros. Net salary is therefore around 2,130 euros per month. For a married employee (class 2) with two children, tax credits and allowances significantly reduce the tax burden.
