Business permit in Luxembourg: Complete guide
The business permit is a legal prerequisite in Luxembourg to carry out most commercial, craft, industrial or liberal activities. Issued by the Directorate General for SMEs and Entrepreneurship of the Ministry of the Economy, it guarantees that the manager has the required professional qualifications and good repute. The average processing time is 4 to 8 weeks.
Conditions for obtaining
The applicant must meet three cumulative conditions. First, professional good repute: a clean criminal record extract (bulletin no. 3) less than 3 months old from the country of residence and each country where the applicant has resided for more than 5 years. Next, professional qualification: recognised diploma, professional experience of at least 3 years in the sector, or certificate of capacity depending on the activity (craft, horeca, commerce, industry). Finally, having a fixed establishment in Luxembourg (commercial premises or domiciliation contract).

Timeline and procedure
The application is made online via the MyGuichet.lu portal or by mail. The processing time is 4 to 8 weeks on average, which may be extended if additional documents are requested or if the qualification requires validation by the Chamber of Skilled Trades and Crafts or the Chamber of Commerce. The permit is issued in the name of the qualified manager and attached to a specific company. In case of a change of manager or activity, a new application is necessary.
